Rehabilitation Projects
Fellow Hatteras Owner:
Hope all is well and your “Second love” is responding to the lavish
attention we all tend to shower on them. We are at it again, trying to
gather data that will benefit everyone. Your club is requesting information
on repairs and projects taken on by each member in a hope to build a database
where each of our members could refer to for help. Just think of how beneficial
it would have been to talk with a person who’s “Been There, Done That”
with all the “Good, Bad and the Ugly” prior to jumping into that one !X?$X
project that really did not turn out as well as we expected. The worst
that could happen is that you might find an easier or cheaper way to accomplish
your next project or repair. That’s what we’re trying to achieve.
With this effort clearly in front of us, I have formulated a project-tracking
list to facilitate this effort. It has been developed in MS Excel. Below
are two links. The first one - "Review Project
Tracking List" - is a spreadsheet that lists all of the various projects reported
by Hatteras 1510 members, organized by type. The
second link - "Submit project information" - is your opportunity to contribute
to the report by providing information on your experiences working on your Hatteras.
Please click on the attachment below. All you have to do is select the section,
give a brief description of what was involved, the products used, how you liked,
disliked, the end results, etc.
When you submit your information, it will be
e-mailed to the webmaster who will update the project listing every week with
all new information. Who knows? You might discover an interesting side benefit,
really finding out just how much you have done to the Old Girl. All information
e-mailed will be entered onto the list every week, so be sure to check out
the project tracking list on a routine basis. So help us help you. Please
respond
to this request.

"Two If By Sea"
Captain Scott Culshaw and First Mate Cheryl
The boat is a 1977 53 classic purchased in Fla. last July
from the Sea Turtle Foundation after it was donated by a couple
from Maryland. We purchased the boat with the idea of restoring
her to our standards and then taking her to the Great Lakes for
our summer home. Last year we put a new bottom on her and redid
the underwater running gear, new swim platform, new deck under
the windlass, rebuilt the windlass, redid the flybridge, new galley,
new carpet, new furniture, new electronics, repainted the hull,
new skirting for the aft deck, started rehab on all three
heads and started on the engine rooms. This series of pictures
was the redo of the galley.

1&2 the before straight from Hatteras note
the stove is on the forward bulkhead like most of the latter model
boats so in heavy seas the refrigerator door doesn't fly open
and spill its load on the deck. (we'll take our chances)

3. After the fun part of getting
the old appliances out the real chore begins! The shelves in the
main cabinet along the side are fiber glassed to the side of the
boat and the countertop is the bottom of the cabinet under the window.
I just cut the counter top off with the same sawzall that I used
on the stove and refrigerator. Later I will slide the new sub
counter top under the old and screw in place.

5. We put 304 S/S back splashes behind the
stove and next to the refrigerator to cover the old weathered plastic
which had made a mess of the once nice wood under it.

7. Starboard side wires to forward cabin.

9. Final fitup before the counter sub base
goes in.

|
4. Leave room for
the wiring coming from engine room and blower hose from generator
room. I also redid the plumbing with heavier copper tubing. I also
screwed 2X4 to the old shelve stubs so I had something to attach
the new cabinets too.

6. WHAT'S UNDER THE HEAD LINER? port side

8. Fit up of Kraftmaid cabinets next to new refrigerator.

10. Final fitup before the counter sub base
goes in.

11. Sub base installed and fit up before solid
surface
countertops get installed.

Finished project. One note on the windows. Ours like almost
everyone's leaked and had done damage to the wood around the window.
The guy who had ours before got so mad he had filled everything
to do with the windows with sealant( several different kinds) We
found that the openings for the windows had been cut to large and
there was not enough wood to screw the windows to and they had just
use silicone to seal the windows to. We dug out the rotten core
and scabbed plywood in the space to make a tighter fit and have
not had drop one of water. We also did not like the grain of the
wood that ran at right angles to the side deck instead of the galley
deck so that was covered in white to brighten up the galley.
The admiral also wanted more cabinet space so she opted not to
put the dishwasher back and went with the microwave/convection
oven instead of a full size oven with separate microwave. She
does plan on cooking a full size turkey on board anyway!
